A lesson in social media usage from Trollwood

Often times, I  go out and speak to community groups about social media (by the way, I’m taking appointments now, so if you’d like me to talk about blogging and social media to your club or organization I’m available. No charge. But of course, I won’t turn down lunch if it’s offered. I’m not stupid.). Anyway, I tout the benefits of using your Areavoices blog as part of your multi-tiered social media plan.

How you can use it as a promotional tool right along side your website, Facebook and Twitter feeds. Many of our best bloggers do just that.

Today, I wanted to highlight one. Trollwood Performing Arts School does an excellent job communicating with the public regarding their upcoming events. For example, this Monday the school is set to both unveil a new website and announce its 2013 Mainstage Musical.

You’ll notice they’ve promoted it on their Facebook page  and on Twitter @Trollwood. They also sent an email blast to interested people promoting the event and going to Facebook and checking out their Areavoices blog as well.

What’s especially helpful is that they used the blog not just to tease the upcoming event, but to provide further information for the public. In this case, an interview with the website designer from Sundog. (Experienced bloggers themselves. They have a blog on Areavoices as well.) So the reader is left with more than a nugget of news but information that otherwise might never have been heard or seen.

Great job Trollwood!

(And no, this praise of Trollwood is not my way of bribing them into telling me early what this year’s show will be. I tried. They’re not budging.)

A real life Eva Gabor? – Areavoices Digest #80

If you’re over a certain age…ahem…you grew up not only watching this ridiculous show but singing it’s catchy lyrics.

Green acres is the place for me.
Farm livin’ is the life for me.
Land spreadin’ out so far and wide
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.

Green Acres ran from 1965 to 1971 and starred Eddie Albert as Oliver Wendell Douglas, a frustrated New York City banker who longed for simple country life. His pampered wife Lisa, played by Eva Gabor wasn’t as ready to chuck everything.

New York is where I’d rather stay.
I get allergic smelling hay.
I just adore a penthouse view.
Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

He convinces or rather drags (“You are my wife!”) Lisa to Hooterville,  USA to start farming. What ensues is 1960′s era hilarity as Oliver drives his tractor wearing a suit and Lisa parades around the house in silk robes and feather boas.

But in our midst on Areavoices we might have a real life Eva Gabor.

Does Father Know Best, Least, or Last?

We’ve all been raised to believe the former. At least those of us who grew up watching black and white reruns on TBS. We watched as Ward Cleaver told Wally not to always listen to Eddie Haskell (has there ever been a better TV character than Eddie Haskell?) And what about Robert Young on Father Knows Best? As Midwestern Insurance Executive Jim Anderson he guided Princess, Bud and Kitten through the trials of 1950′s youth. Some have said shows like this idealized family life. Did audiences in the 1950′s think this was the way all families should act? Maybe. But I think we can look back these days and reflect upon the sweetness and the hokiness of the sitcoms. If nothing else we get to enjoy Eddie.

But what’s the real story of fatherhood in 2012? I’m happy to say we have two Areavoices bloggers who sum things up pretty well and they do so with a poke at Young’s old show.

Father Knows Last blogger Jim Lindlauf and wife Sue

Father Knows Last is the story of Grand Forks father and husband Jim Lindlauf. He’s been blogging on Areavoices since 2009 and if anyone knows the fatherhood game, it’s Jim. He’s been married for 27 years and is raising a teenage son.

Father Knows Least

Our second father blogger is in a totally different place, Father Knows Least, is written from the perspective of a brand new dad. Kirby became a dad in December, and writes “from the horror stories of projectile fluids, to the simple joy of a baby giggle, I hope you enjoy the comedy that has become my life.” We do, Kirby.

Happy Father’s Day dads, and whether you know best, least or last, we love you!

Areavoices Digest #76 – Running, Minnesota Vikings, and Season-Ending TV

I decided for this week’s list of recommended blogs, I’d go with the real HOT TOPICS. What’s making news? What’s the buzz? What are you talking about around the water cooler?

At my office, it’s been a lot of chatter about the upcoming Fargo Marathon, which attracts 20 thousand runners from around the nation. We’re also talking about the newly-passed Viking stadium. And TV talk is always big:  “Who’s going to win American Idol or Dancing with the Stars?”

That being said these Areavoices blogs hit on those topics. Check them out! And if you’re interested in writing your own blog, don’t forget to drop me a line. I’d love to hear from you: tracy.briggs@fccinteractive.com

Areavoices Digest #70 – A song that might drive WDAY’s Weather Guys Crazy!

Okay, technically “Fargo’s First Radio” isn’t turning 90 until May 22nd, but I’m a firm believer in celebrating milestones as long as possible.

But perhaps more than that, the station’s anniversary is worth mentioning today because of something the fine folks at ‘DAY just started doing. They’re helping us relive history. (I mentioned last week how the Duluth News Tribune is celebrating history in it’s Attic blog, now WDAY is following suit). The station has uncovered some classic old radio clips from the past century – with the voices of Ken Kennedy, Jack Dunn and more. (Trivia: Did you know WDAY radio personality Ken Kennedy discovered singing great Peggy Lee, the former Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, ND?) What’s even more fun is hearing the old game shows and commercials. Now you can hear these clips from the Golden era of radio on the WDAY Radio Blog.

I have to point out one clip in particular. It’s from a live weather report in 1946. What stands out to me is the weather jingle sung by Lynn Abbott. It is vintage. Really cheesy. But delightful. I’m sure the jingle stopped airing in the 1940′s or 50′s, but it never really went away. I remember a couple of years ago when I worked for WDAY, the studio production crew would pipe this old jingle into the studio as the meteorologists were prepping their forecast. While I think they all appreciated the walk down memory lane, I think it might have driven them a little nuts too. Now you can listen to that song on the WDAY radio blog.

The WDAY radio blog will be sharing these clips with us through the spring and even summer. Please feel free to leave your comments and memories in the comments section of their blog.

Now here is the WDAY radio blog along with the rest of the recommended blogs of the week:

Areavoices Digest #62 – What exactly is “Geek Culture” anyway?

Would you describe yourself as a “geekette?”

Well, that’s how Kari Lucin describes herself. This Areavoices blogger says she loves “Dungeons and Dragons,” science fiction and playing video games. She writes about all of her loves in her blog “Oh look! A Shiny Thing!” The blog is both well-written and very funny. Step into Kari’s world for a minute. She claims you don’t even need to be a geek.

The “Brady Bunch Update” is scheduled

You might have read in this blog last week that some updates are being made to Areavoices.

In a nutshell, Areavoices users will see security enhancements and the implementation of a search function, which will enable readers to more easily find information.

But the biggest change is what you’ll now be seeing on the homepage of Areavoices.com. Right now if you go to www.areavoices.com  you see a list of our featured Areavoices blogs. But after the update, you’ll see some featured blogs displayed in a square, grid-like pattern. I’ve referred to it as a Brady Bunch kind of look (you know what I mean, right? Kind of like the open to the beloved ’70′s show where the faces of the main characters were displayed in boxes, one atop the other. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I insist you spend some quality time on Nick at Night.)

I was happy to hear today that the developers working on this update have actually adopted my Brady Bunch reference, calling this “The Brady Bunch Upgrade.” (It’s nice to feel like I’ve made a difference in the world.)

To make this happen, the crew here at FCC interactive will have to take the site down for awhile. And it’s happening TONIGHT.

The upgrade is scheduled to start at 11:59pm tonight. It shouldn’t take too much time. But it will mean you will not be about to go on Areavoices.com for about 2-3 hours. We should be up and running again by early morning.

I will tell you the list of featured blogs will remain under the directory tab. Not all of the featured blogs will appear in the new “Brady Bunch” squares. To start we’ll be displaying the most active/popular 40 or so blogs in the squares. That’s just a nice place to start. I will be adding new blogs to the squares in the future. If you’d like to make sure your blog is featured in the square layout, just shoot me an email at tracy.briggs@fccinteractive.com

But again, all of your blogs will still be found on the directory the way they are now.

Because some of the blogs will now be displayed in a square, I would like to ask some of you to add a featured image to each post. It’s really easy to do. I will do a video tutorial of how to do it, later this week after you get a chance to see the new design. Adding the featured image is entirely optional, but will make your blog stand out a bit more.

So again, the update starts at 11:59pm tonight. Areavoices.com will be down for a couple of hours. Might be a good chance to catch up on some Brady Bunch reruns.

Top 10 Ways to Avoid Blog Burnout

Not long ago, I received a call from a blogger who was sick to death of writing his blog. This is not a picture of him. This is Jimmy Buffett. I’ll get to him in a minute. But first the blogger…

“I just sit at my computer, staring blankly at it, feeling like I have nothing to say. I’m just so sick of writing.”

A classic case of blog burnout. So what should this once prolific blogger do?

Relax, take a deep breath and read my “Top 10 Ways to Avoid Blog Burnout.”

If this doesn’t work don’t say I didn’t try.

Enjoy! And feel free to leave your own tips for avoiding and dealing with blog burnout. And be sure to watch my electronic newsletter posted below from Smilebox. If you’d like me to email you this newsletter, just leave a comment here and I’ll get you on the mailing list.

TOP 10 WAYS TO AVOID BLOG BURNOUT:

10) Focus on quality not quantity. Never write just for the sake of writing. It’s better to have 2 good posts in a week, than 5 mediocre ones.

9) Read other bloggers posts. And not just blogs that you normally read. Go outside your comfort zone and read posts from many different bloggers. They might inspire you in ways you wouldn’t expect.

8) Get a little help from your friends. The Beatles might have said it best. Get a little help from a guest blogger. Or just interview an interesting person in your community.

7) Look at your blog stats and see what’s resonating with people. If you know what topics have hit with your readers, you might get that boost you need to write more.

6) Read and reply to your commenters. You might get inspired by one of their observations. Or not.

5) For heaven’s sake don’t obsess! Perfection is overrated. If you’re stressing out over every word in every blog post, you’re taking this whole blog thing way too seriously. Make it good, but it doesn’t need to be perfect.

4) Rework a favorite old post. Maybe you didn’t have enough time to really get into a topic that you loved. Well do it now. Find a new angle. Start a new conversation about a favorite old topic all over again.

3) Remember, short blog posts are generally more popular than long ones. If you feel like you’re running out of time to post, maybe you’re posts are too long. Consider breaking subject matter into 3 or 4 shorter blog posts. That’ll help your blog traffic and make you feel less overwhelmed to produce a lot of content.

2) Put yourself on a schedule. Make a certain couple of hours every week as your “blog time.” Write several posts and post date them so they’ll publish whenever you’d like them to. It puts less pressure on you to post everyday and it helps you stay focused.

And the Number One Way to Avoid Blog Burnout is…..

1) Embrace it then move one…..
There’s a reason bosses like vacations. Workers come back refreshed, inspired and more productive. The same can be true for blogging. Take a break. Go to the islands, drink margaritas and listen to Jimmy Buffett. Maybe, it’s just the break you need. Your blog isn’t going anywhere. You can take a break for months at a time and your Areavoices blog will be waiting for you. (And really if you’re in the islands drinking margaritas with Jimmy Buffett, you’ll probably have a lot to write about when you come back!)

Happy Blogging! (and/or say “hi” to Jimmy!)

Areavoices Digest #42 – A terrific twosome

When it rains it pours. These days in addition to some of my regular duties I find myself immersed in two pretty cool projects here at Forum Communications. You could say I’m just getting my feet wet with our water project “Living with Water.”  (Pardon the pun, but I couldn’t help myself.) The project involves  FCC’s print, online, and broadcast journalists chronicling how water impacts our lives. And most importantly, we need your input too! To read more about it, click on my blog post from a couple of days ago or go to http://water.areavoices.com to learn more about it.

Beautiful Women of Committee

Now, we’re undertaking another special project that is near and dear to my  heart. It’s called “Beautiful Women of: Letting Inner Beauty Shine.” As a mom of two daughters I’m well aware of the media imagery they face everyday. Knowing the effect the media has on body image among young girls and women in our society, our organization has an opportunity to create awareness and have a positive influence on our community. Using the multimedia platforms of Forum Communications, including here on Areavoices, we will celebrate the stories of the beautiful, inspiring women in our area. You will be able to nominate the deserving women in your life. We will then select a few women each month to feature here, and readers will vote for woman they most want to see featured on an upcoming WDAY news broadcast, in The Forum, and on WDAY radio and these companies websites. The woman you select also will be treated to a generous prize package.

Two very different undertakings but so worthwhile and fun! Those are just two of the blogs I’m recommending in this week’s digest:

Living with Water – http://water.areavoices.com A Forum Communications Special Project with the goal of building understanding about water and its impact on our lives across the region.

Beautiful Women of: Letting Inner Beauty Shine – http://beautifulwomenof.areavoices.com   A multi-media project from Forum Communications celebrating and recognizing remarkable women throughout the region.

Areavoices Digest #41 – Ole and Lena go to Sturgis?

Awhile back during the spring flood I stumbled across a great blog called “The Adventures of Ole and Lena.” In it, “Lena” documented the troubles she and “Ole” faced living near the rising Buffalo river near Moorhead, Minnesota. It wasn’t all gloom and doom though. Lena’s blog also helps us understand Norwegian culture. Advising us on how to make lefse and lutefisk and explaining the proper usage of “Uff Da.” Well, we got the Scandinavian scoop for now and the water has subsided so what is Lena to write about now? How about her adventures at the 71st annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota? The thought just makes me smile.

Ole and Lena are just two of the contributors to a blog set up by The Forum about this year’s rally. Check them out along with the other recommended blogs of the week:

This year, you can keep tabs on all the news from We Fest as Forum columnist John Lamb blogs live from Soo Pass. Can’t you just see him in his cowboy hat?

It’s just the first of this week’s recommended blogs.

Areavoices Digest #39 – Learning more about Home Schooling

In the past few months Areavoices has been happy to welcome dozens of schools into the blogosphere. From preschools to elementary schools from  high schools to colleges, administrators, teachers and students are publishing their own news right on the homepages of our Forum Communications news websites. It’s a wonderful way to share news with parents, alumni and the community that the papers can’t always cover. If you’re interested in learning more about school blogging, by all means give me a jingle. I’d love to get you up to speed before those little kiddies go back to class.

But of course, not all students, walk the halls of our public and private schools. Some are home schooled and until now we hadn’t seen much representation from the home school community on Areavoices. However, last week, a home school parent out of Grand Forks, North Dakota told me about a new blog entitled, “Homeschool: Exploring Alternative Education.”

For anybody interested in learning more about home schooling or even those critical of it, this blog provides some interesting insights. I would highly recommend it and these other four blogs in this weeks’ Areavoices Digest:

Homeschool:  Exploring Educational Alternatives – http://k12educationalternatives.areavoicesc.om

Jesse Light is a homeschooling parent who started this blog as a place where anyone concerned about k12 education alternatives can discuss and share ideas about what educational options outside traditional institutional schooling.

Areavoices Digest #38: P-P-P-Penny Keep Posting that Blog!

If you’ve had children anytime after 1990 or so, you undoubtedly know what my headline means. If you haven’t you probably think I’m weird.  You might think that regardless. But let me explain.

Young children in the upper Midwest are nuts for “Penny and Pals.” Penny and her Pals travel around our region entertaining and educating children through her music. My kids went bonkers for her when they were in preschool. Now you’d think I would have gotten sick of those tunes we had to play over and over again in the mini van. But Penny’s songs never did get old.

I’m not going to say people didn’t look at me funny when, one day, I kept singing  “Uncle Underwood’s Unbelievable Ugly Underwear” at work. What was I going to do? It was stuck in my head. Even so, I wasn’t tired of the tunes. (Today’s headline is in reference to Penny’s friend Bernie and his need to keep bouncing “that ball.” Look it up on Penny’s website. )

Penny’s popularity with the under 8 set makes me all the more excited that she’s joined us on Areavoices. Penny’s blog is just the first of the blogs I’m recommending in this week’s digest. And remember: “R-R-R-Readers, keep reading these blogs!” Okay, that was going too far. I apologize. Nonetheless these are some great blogs!

Cool changes for Areavoices bloggers

Sometimes I get a little scared when my co-worker Zac Echola comes to me with news of systems upgrades. I’m afraid I give him that deer in headlights look and insist he speak to me like I was in the 4th grade. (That backfired awhile back when another techy co-worker reminded me of the technical proficiency of most 4th graders.) Anyway, he proceeded to tell me about the upgrade to WordPress 3.2 effective today.

The upgrade brings some technical changes. To see a complete list go to https://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.2

But let me tell you about the changes that will most affect you.

The new default theme for new users will be called Twenty Eleven. That means if you sign up today for a blog it will automatically start your blog in Twenty Eleven. Prior to today the default was Twenty Ten. Twenty Eleven is very similar to Twenty Ten, but has a few more features for handling different post types, which was a feature that came with the last update. I think Twenty Eleven is a really sharp looking theme. I changed one of my blogs from Twenty Ten to Twenty Eleven just by going into the Dashboard, clicking appearance and selecting Twenty Eleven. Here’s what it looks like on my “Ear Candy” blog (that’s my blog where I celebrate embarrassing music).

Besides the sharper looking Twenty Eleven theme, users will also notice increased speed when loading things in the admin. There’s been a lot of optimization done to make things go faster there.

You’ll want to make sure you have updated browsers to use WordPress 3.2. That’s because support for IE6 will be dropped completely. IE7 users may notice problems in parts of the admin. WordPress and Automattic will be dropping support for IE7 soon.

Anyway, we think you’ll like it. If you experience any problems at all please email support@areavoices.com. You can also email me directly and I’ll forward to support if I’m unable to answer your questions.

Areavoices #37 – My Big Fat Greek Blog and more…

I loved the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” which told the story of a young Greek American woman navigating modern day romance within the confines of her traditional Greek family. So funny. Maybe that’s why I’m excited to welcome, “My Big Fat Greek Blog” to Areavoices. No, this one doesn’t involve the movie, but I think it could be equally fun!  It’s written by a woman in Fargo, North Dakota navigating what it means to run a Greek restaurant in the land of lefse and lutefisk. It’s just the latest blogs I’m recommending in this week’s digest.
