Looking for the area’s messiest desk!

Packrats everywhere claim that “a clean desk is the sign of a sick mind.” If that’s true we are about to introduce you to some very healthy people.

The Messy Desk is a celebration of the messiest desks in the region. We want your pictures! Share just how bad it’s gotten. Do your co-workers, family, and friends make fun of you, cracking wise about finding Jimmy Hoffa in your desk drawers? This is your chance to show your pride for your desk. If it can’t be cleared off, it might as well be celebrated for being the pinnacle of clutterdom. Just send your pictures to me at tracy.briggs@forumcomm.com and I’ll post them to this blog.

Help might be on the way for the messiest among you!

Consider this story for inspiration. Back in the early ’90′s a co-worker of mine lost his father. His job was to clean out his father’s office. As a college professor, his father was known to have saved a lot of old papers, tests, and documents. But my friend couldn’t imagine just how bad it was. My friend found a memo on his father’s desk from 1974. 20 years old. I know some of you can relate.

So show us your clutter and celebrate MESSYDESKITIS!

Tickled Pink about Livin Up!

I don’t know Roger Sievers very well. He’s a multi-media producer for the Rivertown newspaper group. We’ve chatted a few times for work purposes and met once while he attended a Forum Comm meeting in Fargo. But I know after watching his new video blog, “Livin Up” that I’d like to get to know him better.

I just love what he’s doing with this blog. He’s highlighting fun ideas, activities, and projects for families. And he should know. He’s the oldest of 12 children and a father to three of his own.

This man knows what it means to keep a family busy. But what’s nice is that he shares his ideas in an easy to understand, lighthearted way. Perfect when you think a lot of parents don’t have a lot of time to spend watching video blogs.

So check him out at http://livinup.areavoices.com

We want your Christmas memories and traditions!

What I love about the Areavoices Community is the opportunity it gives for everyone to weigh in.

That’s what I like most about one of our newest blogs, “Traditions of the Season”

We’re asking everyone who reads it to weigh in and share your favorite holiday memories and traditions, share your pictures as well. I want it to feel like we’re sitting around the Christmas table with coffee (or egg nog)  talking about what makes the holidays so special for us.

I love hearing what others do to make Christmas “the most wonderful time of the year!”

Please share your stories and pictures by emailing them to me at tracy.briggs@forumcomm.com. I’ll look them over and get them published on the Traditions of the Seasons blog.

Look where I found some quirky and fun cakes – Areavoices Digest #86

What is this a picture of? It’s a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, right? Wrong. Look again.
It’s actually a peanut butter and jelly sandwich CAKE. How absolutely cute is this? I stumbled across this on Facebook and I proceeded to put in on my Pinterest board (where, let’s be honest, good recipes go to gather dust. As much as I love them, I seldom commit to making them. But I think I have to try this one!)

I noticed that the recipe came from Shannon over at North Dakota Kitchen.  Check out the recipe: http://www.northdakotakitchen.net/2012/08/peanut-butter-and-jelly-sandwich-cake.html

I started thinking how great it would be to share Shannon’s very clever recipes with Areavoices and readers of Forum Communications papers.  Shannon agreed to start an Areavoices blog. Yay! I think you’ll love her fun recipes like Cookie Monster cupcakes or Cracked Egg Cupcakes (I’m doing those for Easter. What a hoot!) But she also has more mainstream recipes that look plain yummy.

We’re happy to have her North Dakota Vintage Kitchen on Areavoices. It’s the first of my recommended blogs of the week.

I love the title of Heather King’s new blog (maybe because I’m a Mamasota myself. I only have two kids. But I’m with her on the minivan, hubby and kids). As a native of West Central Minnesota she’s  come home from the Twin Cities to talk about life as a Minnesota mom. (No we don’t all sound like Marge from the movie “Fargo.”)

She’s just the first in this week’s list of recommended blogs. Many thanks to Ashley White of the West Central Tribune for helping to get these fine bloggers featured.

More from the Oil Boom, Junkfest and a Little Something for Teachers – Areavoices Digest #83

I’m really excited about this week’s list of recommended Areavoices blogs. I’m excited to welcome news from Black Gold Boom,  a multimedia project exploring the oil boom in western North Dakota. Stories air on Prairie Public and are produced by Todd Melby. This blog is a supplement to their existing website www.blackgoldboom.com and should provide a peek at life inside the boom.

Cassie, Missy and Lynette call themselves “girls who love junk” so they created Junkfest (the event and the blog). “Now held at the Foster County Fairgrounds in Carrington, ND, the annual Autumn Junk Fest has become a festive gathering of Trash Talkers and Treasure Seekers!  You’ll find tons of refurbished and repurposed treasures for your home and garden.  JunkFest also hosts the best and fastest growing Flea Market in these parts!” Sounds like fun!

Back in April of 2009,  a self-proclaimed, “crazy 8th grade Language Arts teacher from St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin” came up with an idea to create a place for teachers to share their professionalism and passion for teaching. We Teach We Learn is the result.

Does Father Know Best, Least, or Last?

We’ve all been raised to believe the former. At least those of us who grew up watching black and white reruns on TBS. We watched as Ward Cleaver told Wally not to always listen to Eddie Haskell (has there ever been a better TV character than Eddie Haskell?) And what about Robert Young on Father Knows Best? As Midwestern Insurance Executive Jim Anderson he guided Princess, Bud and Kitten through the trials of 1950′s youth. Some have said shows like this idealized family life. Did audiences in the 1950′s think this was the way all families should act? Maybe. But I think we can look back these days and reflect upon the sweetness and the hokiness of the sitcoms. If nothing else we get to enjoy Eddie.

But what’s the real story of fatherhood in 2012? I’m happy to say we have two Areavoices bloggers who sum things up pretty well and they do so with a poke at Young’s old show.

Father Knows Last blogger Jim Lindlauf and wife Sue

Father Knows Last is the story of Grand Forks father and husband Jim Lindlauf. He’s been blogging on Areavoices since 2009 and if anyone knows the fatherhood game, it’s Jim. He’s been married for 27 years and is raising a teenage son.

Father Knows Least

Our second father blogger is in a totally different place, Father Knows Least, is written from the perspective of a brand new dad. Kirby became a dad in December, and writes “from the horror stories of projectile fluids, to the simple joy of a baby giggle, I hope you enjoy the comedy that has become my life.” We do, Kirby.

Happy Father’s Day dads, and whether you know best, least or last, we love you!

Areavoices Digest #78 – Now this might make my garden grow

We all must admit our shortcomings.

For example, I am not good at basketball, geometry or abstaining from chocolate.

I am also a really bad gardener. The picture you see to the left is not taken from my garden, but it might as well have been. After years of blaming my pathetic little plants on deer, rabbits and weed infestation,  I finally admitted it -  I’m just green-thumb challenged.

But there is help. Areavoices is home to several bloggers who aren’t green thumb challenged and who share their wisdome through every post. They’ll take you through how to successfully garden without wanting to pull your hair out or shoot those rabbits.

Check out their blogs in this week’s digest along with a brand new counseling blog.

Areavoices Digest #77 – I love this idea for a family summer vacation!

Every year, families all over America start thinking about it (if they haven’t been dreaming about it since January). What are we going to do for summer vacation? We spend thousands flying (and with high gas prices driving too) to all kinds of summer hot spots.

But how many of us explore our own backyards? I’m not really talking about a “Staycation.” That implies you’re staying in your own home or city. What I’m talking about is touring your own state. Looking around at what’s just a few hundred miles away and seeing what outstate tourists see.

I think about this when I’ve traveled to the Washington D.C. area to visit my relatives and do some sightseeing. Often, after telling my aunts and uncles, who live in suburban Washington, that I’m going to check out one tourist spot or another in DC, they’ll say, “We haven’t even seen that yet.”

Many of us don’t bother looking at what’s close at hand.

Well, that’s what native North Dakotan Sarah Nasello and her family are doing. They’re taking the time this summer to immerse themselves in all things North Dakota. So not only will they see the tourist hotspots they’ll check those off the wall places as well,  Meet the people and walk down the mainstreets. She’ll be documenting all of it in her Areavoices blog.

It should be a lot of fun. Check out her blog and the other recommended blogs of the week.

Areavoices Digest #74 – Are you training for the marathon?

Their numbers seem to multiply around this time every year. The snow is gone and the weather hasn’t yet turned hot. Runners are coming out of the woodwork, some to train for upcoming marathons (The Fargo Marathon is May 17-19th) and others simply to get their daily exercise.

There is no shortage of advice out there about what it takes to be a runner, but let me steer you towards one of the best. Steve Wagner, an editor at the Bemidji Pioneer, is an avid runner who started relatively late in life. But as the title of his blog suggests, he’s already hooked. Areavoices Digest #73 – Capitalizing on the Pinterest explosion

No doubt you’ve heard about the meteoric rise of Pinterest. In two short years, the digital bulletin board has become the third most popular social network trailing only behind Facebook and Twitter in the number of monthly users. In fact,  Pinterest doubled it’s number of users between January and February of this year and no other social network reached 10 million users faster than Pinterest. Although recent reports suggest that growth is slowing Pinterest is still a hot commodity for it’s millions of users (80% of them female). Now one of our Areavoices bloggers is making it easier for you to Pin without really pinning.

Her name is Jen Burris and she’s taking what she sees on Pinterest and trying it out for herself. And we get to read about it on her blog. It’s just one of the recommended blogs of the week. Enjoy!

Areavoices Digest #58 – Food, family, photography and BISON!

After a week away, it’s time for another Areavoices Digest of recommended blogs.

Not everyone was taking a break during the holidays.  It looks like quite a few people were busy setting up Areavoices blogs for the new year. Four of the five blogs this week are brand-spankin new to Areavoices and they’re definitely worth checking out!

The 5th is bound to generate a ton of interest this week. Maybe, even a stampede of thundering blog traffic (get it?). That’s right. If you haven’t yet read it, this might be the week to check out the Bison Media blog written by Jeff Kolpack of The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead and Dom Izzo from WDAY-TV.  As anybody in Fargo could probably tell you, the North Dakota State University Bison football team is in Frisco,  Texas this week to prepare for their national championship game against Sam Houston College. Dom and Jeff will be busy bringing us their news and analysis in print, on television and in their blog.

Areavoices Digest #57 – Check these blogs before you finish your Christmas shopping

Can you guess how many iPads will be sold this holiday season? According the the technology research firm Gartner about 63.4 million media tablets will be sold in the last three months of this year, about 3/4 of them are iPads.

We don’t have iPads on our Christmas lists this year, but my kids have asked for a Nintendo 3DS (isn’t her other DS okay?), laptops, phones, and more. Whatever happened to asking for a Barbie? My kids might be disappointed in a few days.

Our Christmas’ are undoubtedly getting more tech-saturated. It’s hard to sort what you need to know from what isn’t important.

That’s why I’m happy to recommend a couple of great tech blogs this week. They offer news, information, advice and analysis for those of us trying to keep up. But, if you need advice on how to set up a Barbie Dream House, I’m your woman.

Areavoices Digest #55 – Talking Baseball and more

The snow might be starting to fall outside my window, but at Areavoices we’re talking Major League baseball. I’m excited that one of our favorite bloggers, Chad Jacobsen of Twins Focus has taken on the task of starting a new blog entitled: MLB Talk. Maybe it’s because the Twins were less than stellar this year, or maybe it’s just because there’s so much baseball news outside the state.  Either way, I’m happy to see that Chad is spreading his wings and broadening his topic. It’s just the first of several new blogs on Areavoices that you might want to check out. Enjoy!

Areavoices Digest #48 – This is fall, really?

My husband has been in a funk lately. He’s not a fan of hot weather. He’s longing for what he calls “real fall weather.” You know crisp, football weather. As for me, I’m all about milking every last warm day out of fall that we can get. As I write this, the old temperature gauge outside says 84 degrees. That’s fabulous if you ask me.

That crisp, football weather is not far away. All you have to do is look up to the trees and see for yourselves. Despite the July like temps, the trees are screaming September. The colors are starting to change throughout the upper Midwest. If you’d like to see some of mother nature’s most spectacular hues, check out the first of this weeks’ recommended blogs. After that, put on those flip flops, get yourself a boat drink and sit on the patio. Just keep your sweatshirt close by. Enjoy!

Areavoices Digest #47 – Do you eat dinner with your family?

It’s something we used to see on “Leave it to Beaver.” June Cleaver clad in heels and pearls serving a meat and potatoes dinner around the table. Wally and Beaver shared details from their day. (I don’t remember what Beave said about this black eye incident pictured to the left.)  Most dinners with the Cleavers weren’t that dramatic except maybe if Eddie Haskell was involved. Family dinners were just the thing you did back then. Heck even the Bradys gathered around their ginormous table presumably to talk about trips to Hawaii or the Grand Canyon.

But the fact is now many American families don’t take the time to sit down together. We’re rushing off to soccer practice, hockey practice or play rehearsal. We’re over-scheduled and overwraught.

One of our featured blogs of the week takes a second look at dining together and give tips on how you could make it work. It’s just the first of five great Areavoices blogs you might want to check out. Enjoy!
