Why didn’t I think of that?

Every once in awhile, I run across a blog that makes me think, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Rose’s Pin-Tests is one of those blogs: http://rosespintests.areavoices.com

The blog is written by a college student who takes ideas she finds on Pinterest then actually tries them out. Then she follows it up with a review.

I LOVE this idea. Maybe it’s because I’m the Queen of Pinterest. Or rather the Queen of pinning-things-on-Pinterest-then-never-actually-trying-them. That’s why I love this concept. She has “Made it myself Monday” for crafty pins and “Foodie Friday” for food pins (my favorite kind). And it’s a free for all the rest of the days of the week.

So check it out! Maybe, she’ll inspire you to actually make use out of all that stuff on your Pinterest boards!

“Real Food” vs Processed Food – Areavoices Digest #89

So as I sat the other day spraying cheese in a can on my snack crackers, I began to think “Can this be real cheese?”

Well the answer is “probably not.”  First clue: any cheese that’s spelled with a “z” is probably not the real deal. Second clue: When a dairy product gets loaded into an aerosol can it’s probably a red flag.

It’s not that it’s not good. But is it what’s best for you?

Study after study these days touts eating “real food.” The kind of food our grandparents and great parents ate. Think about what those people ate. They didn’t have fat-free this or fat-free that and most weren’t sipping on diet soda. It was the high octane stuff for them. And many of them looked great! I remember when I worked at WDAY-TV and the pictures hung up all over the building of early TV and radio personalities. What struck me most was the little itty bitty tiny waists these women had. How’d they get them?

Well one of our newest bloggers might have the answer.

In 2012, Char became more interested in “real food,” as she started to try and remove most processed foods from her diet. She’s learning as she goes and will use her new blog to document her experiences, successes and pitfalls. You’ll also get a recipe or two.

It’s just the first in our recommended blogs of the week.

Look where I found some quirky and fun cakes – Areavoices Digest #86

What is this a picture of? It’s a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, right? Wrong. Look again.
It’s actually a peanut butter and jelly sandwich CAKE. How absolutely cute is this? I stumbled across this on Facebook and I proceeded to put in on my Pinterest board (where, let’s be honest, good recipes go to gather dust. As much as I love them, I seldom commit to making them. But I think I have to try this one!)

I noticed that the recipe came from Shannon over at North Dakota Kitchen.  Check out the recipe: http://www.northdakotakitchen.net/2012/08/peanut-butter-and-jelly-sandwich-cake.html

I started thinking how great it would be to share Shannon’s very clever recipes with Areavoices and readers of Forum Communications papers.  Shannon agreed to start an Areavoices blog. Yay! I think you’ll love her fun recipes like Cookie Monster cupcakes or Cracked Egg Cupcakes (I’m doing those for Easter. What a hoot!) But she also has more mainstream recipes that look plain yummy.

We’re happy to have her North Dakota Vintage Kitchen on Areavoices. It’s the first of my recommended blogs of the week.

She’s just the first in this week’s list of recommended blogs. Many thanks to Ashley White of the West Central Tribune for helping to get these fine bloggers featured.

Areavoices Digest #78 – Now this might make my garden grow

We all must admit our shortcomings.

For example, I am not good at basketball, geometry or abstaining from chocolate.

I am also a really bad gardener. The picture you see to the left is not taken from my garden, but it might as well have been. After years of blaming my pathetic little plants on deer, rabbits and weed infestation,  I finally admitted it -  I’m just green-thumb challenged.

But there is help. Areavoices is home to several bloggers who aren’t green thumb challenged and who share their wisdome through every post. They’ll take you through how to successfully garden without wanting to pull your hair out or shoot those rabbits.

Check out their blogs in this week’s digest along with a brand new counseling blog.

Areavoices Digest #77 – I love this idea for a family summer vacation!

Every year, families all over America start thinking about it (if they haven’t been dreaming about it since January). What are we going to do for summer vacation? We spend thousands flying (and with high gas prices driving too) to all kinds of summer hot spots.

But how many of us explore our own backyards? I’m not really talking about a “Staycation.” That implies you’re staying in your own home or city. What I’m talking about is touring your own state. Looking around at what’s just a few hundred miles away and seeing what outstate tourists see.

I think about this when I’ve traveled to the Washington D.C. area to visit my relatives and do some sightseeing. Often, after telling my aunts and uncles, who live in suburban Washington, that I’m going to check out one tourist spot or another in DC, they’ll say, “We haven’t even seen that yet.”

Many of us don’t bother looking at what’s close at hand.

Well, that’s what native North Dakotan Sarah Nasello and her family are doing. They’re taking the time this summer to immerse themselves in all things North Dakota. So not only will they see the tourist hotspots they’ll check those off the wall places as well,  Meet the people and walk down the mainstreets. She’ll be documenting all of it in her Areavoices blog.

It should be a lot of fun. Check out her blog and the other recommended blogs of the week.

Areavoices Digest #72 – Spinach Bacon Mac and Cheese and Black Russian Cake

I enjoy writing my little blog on the Areavoices community. I really do. I love sharing news of the latest and greatest blogs on the platform. But deep down, I think I’m a frustrated food blogger.

As evidenced by my consumption this week of a great food blog called Lagniappe. (See link below). It’s written by Beth Rickers of Worthington, Minnesota.  I was attracted by a recent post in which Beth describes a pretty decadent meal that starts with Spinach Bacon Mac and Cheese and ends with Black Russian Cake. Hello! The diet can take a break for a day.

Beth is consistent with her recipes and she’s a great writer. It must be so much fun to write about so much deliciousness. Lagniappe is just one of our recommended blogs of the week.

Areavoices Digest #70 – A song that might drive WDAY’s Weather Guys Crazy!

Okay, technically “Fargo’s First Radio” isn’t turning 90 until May 22nd, but I’m a firm believer in celebrating milestones as long as possible.

But perhaps more than that, the station’s anniversary is worth mentioning today because of something the fine folks at ‘DAY just started doing. They’re helping us relive history. (I mentioned last week how the Duluth News Tribune is celebrating history in it’s Attic blog, now WDAY is following suit). The station has uncovered some classic old radio clips from the past century – with the voices of Ken Kennedy, Jack Dunn and more. (Trivia: Did you know WDAY radio personality Ken Kennedy discovered singing great Peggy Lee, the former Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, ND?) What’s even more fun is hearing the old game shows and commercials. Now you can hear these clips from the Golden era of radio on the WDAY Radio Blog.

I have to point out one clip in particular. It’s from a live weather report in 1946. What stands out to me is the weather jingle sung by Lynn Abbott. It is vintage. Really cheesy. But delightful. I’m sure the jingle stopped airing in the 1940′s or 50′s, but it never really went away. I remember a couple of years ago when I worked for WDAY, the studio production crew would pipe this old jingle into the studio as the meteorologists were prepping their forecast. While I think they all appreciated the walk down memory lane, I think it might have driven them a little nuts too. Now you can listen to that song on the WDAY radio blog.

The WDAY radio blog will be sharing these clips with us through the spring and even summer. Please feel free to leave your comments and memories in the comments section of their blog.

Areavoices Digest #66 – Watching the Weather and Getting Away from it all!

I’m not going to lie. I’m more than a little envious of some of my friends right now. While going through Facebook posts I noticed one friend is enjoying Disney World with her family, another is in Hawaii with her husband and still another is on the beach somewhere in the Caribbean.

That’s fine really. I’m okay. It’s no big deal that we’re expecting a major winter storm in Moorhead, Minnesota tomorrow. In fact much of the Dakotas and Minnesota are bracing for it. We probably shouldn’t complain as it’s been a beautiful warm and relatively snow free winter. But still we can’t help but gripe just a little bit. We can almost see spring from our windows. Now this?

Anyway, in honor of the upcoming storm and those friends who have chosen to get away from it all for spring break, I give you this weeks’ digest of recommended blogs. Enjoy!

Are you ready for some lacrosse???? Areavoice Digest #65

In the Land of 10,000 lakes (and nearby) we have our sports. Some say hockey is king (and queen). Football and basketball are right up there and soccer is gaining ground.

We don’t often tell our friends that we’ll be tailgating at the next Lacrosse game. But maybe we will soon.

Lacrosse is a centuries old sport first played by Native Americans. In modern day America the East Coast has been the hub of activity. But like many good things, Lacrosse is spreading west.

Interest in Lacrosse is growing and now children in the region have a place to play. Fargo Warriors Lacrosse is one of our newest Areavoices blogs. It’s a great place to go to learn more about the sport and the club.

Pinterest: Online obsession boosts blog traffic

“My name is Tracy and I’m a Pinterest addict.”

“Hi, Tracy.”

I can almost envision this conversation with some women I know from church. A couple of months ago, as we waited for our children to leave choir practice a conversation started about Pinterest. I had no idea what they were talking about. Imagine my embarrassment when I found out it was the hottest new website around. (I try to stay in the loop on these things, but failed miserably this particular day.)

Well, just a couple of weeks after taking the Pinterest plunge, I find myself a full-scale Pinterest addict, just like many of those women in church. Depending on how you look at it, it’s either a great way to organize valuable content or a complete time suck. What’s Pinterest all about?

I won’t go into great detail here. Suffice it to say Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. If you’re like me, you occasionally rip out magazine articles and pictures when you find something you’d like to save: decorating ideas or haircuts or recipes. My kitchen is full of these scraps of magazine copy. Honestly, I usually end up throwing the crumpled up pages out before ever trying the recipes, haircuts or decorating ideas. So be it. Pinterest helps with all of this by allowing you to virtually pin images and articles by category onto your personalized boards. So I can create a board with my favorite recipe ideas. (My food board is called “YUM!” as that is an expression I use almost always when trying a great new recipe.) When I surf the web and find a recipe that looks great I simply click “Pin it” and I can put it onto my board.

For information about the popularity of Pinterest and how it works here’s a good article.

I mention this now to you Areavoices bloggers because Pinterest can actually  help you get more traffic on your blog.

For example, Areavoices blogger Erin writes a blog called Fairly Crafty. Recently, she wrote a blog post about making her own glittery formal shoes. What a great idea for all those girls and women trying to pull off proms and weddings on a budget. Erin can create a board called “Weddings” or “Style” or “Crafts” and simply pin her link to those boards. Soon enough, her pin will not only be on her board, but the general Pinterest boards and those specialty category boards. So that means anybody surfing Pinterest for Wedding ideas will see Erin’s shoes pop up. Not bad.

Here’s another success story. Sherri Richards writes the Top Mom blog. Most days, her blog will receive a couple hundred views. But back in October Sherri wrote about her efforts to make a homemade Halloween costume, Jesse from Toy Story. She included pictures and instructions and decided to pin it to her board. What followed was about 2,500 new views to her blog!

Now, you have to be careful. Pintrest is a pinboard not a billboard. They discourage an overuse of self-promotion. Don’t pin every blog post you make, be selective. But if you think something is worth sharing, do it.

Pintrest is another opportunity to get your ideas in front of new eyeballs. Give it a shot!

Areavoices Digest #62 – What exactly is “Geek Culture” anyway?

Would you describe yourself as a “geekette?”

Well, that’s how Kari Lucin describes herself. This Areavoices blogger says she loves “Dungeons and Dragons,” science fiction and playing video games. She writes about all of her loves in her blog “Oh look! A Shiny Thing!” The blog is both well-written and very funny. Step into Kari’s world for a minute. She claims you don’t even need to be a geek.

Areavoices Digest #58 – Food, family, photography and BISON!

After a week away, it’s time for another Areavoices Digest of recommended blogs.

Not everyone was taking a break during the holidays.  It looks like quite a few people were busy setting up Areavoices blogs for the new year. Four of the five blogs this week are brand-spankin new to Areavoices and they’re definitely worth checking out!

The 5th is bound to generate a ton of interest this week. Maybe, even a stampede of thundering blog traffic (get it?). That’s right. If you haven’t yet read it, this might be the week to check out the Bison Media blog written by Jeff Kolpack of The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead and Dom Izzo from WDAY-TV.  As anybody in Fargo could probably tell you, the North Dakota State University Bison football team is in Frisco,  Texas this week to prepare for their national championship game against Sam Houston College. Areavoices Digest #57 – Check these blogs before you finish your Christmas shopping

Can you guess how many iPads will be sold this holiday season? According the the technology research firm Gartner about 63.4 million media tablets will be sold in the last three months of this year, about 3/4 of them are iPads.

We don’t have iPads on our Christmas lists this year, but my kids have asked for a Nintendo 3DS (isn’t her other DS okay?), laptops, phones, and more. Whatever happened to asking for a Barbie? My kids might be disappointed in a few days.

Our Christmas’ are undoubtedly getting more tech-saturated. It’s hard to sort what you need to know from what isn’t important.

That’s why I’m happy to recommend a couple of great tech blogs this week. They offer news, information, advice and analysis for those of us trying to keep up. But, if you need advice on how to set up a Barbie Dream House, I’m your woman.

Last minute Thanksgiving recipes and Black Friday advice

If you’re like me these last couple of days of work before Thanksgiving are tough. You’re trying to concentrate on work, but visions of grocery shopping, pumpkin pie baking and Black Friday deal hunting keep creeping in.

“Do I have enough Craisins for my broccoli salad? Will anybody really miss them? Do I have to go back to the store?”

“Hmmm…maybe Mrs. Smith or Village Inn bakes a better pie than I do. Yeah, probably.”

“Is it worth getting up early on Friday to shop? Maybe wearing my jammies and hitting Amazon makes more sense.”

How am I supposed to be a Digital Content Development Director with all this clutter in my head? Well because I am a DCDD (I try not to spell out  my title too often. My fingers start to cramp) I am able to assist in your last minute Thanksgiving preparations.

Areavoices “Midwestern” blogger attracts national attention and generates discussion

Hailey Adkisson has become something of an expert on Midwestern life. Ironic since Hailey grew up in Washington state and spent her college years in Maryland. But a few months back Hailey started a delightful blog here on Areavoices called, “Becoming Midwestern.”

She writes about what it’s like for an “outsider” to move here. She points out the quirks and customs of living in the Dakotas and Minnesota. It’s both fun and eye opening and Hailey communicates her message not as someone judging Midwesterners but as someone who celebrates and appreciates the lifestyle.

Last week a producer from “The John Curley Show” on KIRO in Seattle, Washington found her blog and decided to book her as a guest on the show to discuss the headline making reports of low unemployment and job growth in ND.You can listen to the interview by clicking here:

http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/338654/

Since that interview, a few of you are weighing in on Hailey’s blog both thanking her for her comments and adding a few of your own (for example, tips on how to brace for winter!)

This is her latest blog post.

http://becomingmidwestern.areavoices.com/2011/10/28/becoming-midwestern-has-gone-national/

So Hailey thanks for the P.R!  You realize the Midwest might never let you leave now!

Celestial happenings you can see from your own backyard. I realize many of you are already reading this blog from Bob King of the Duluth News Tribune. But I thought I’d remind you about him just in case.He is consistently the #1 blog on Areavoices (excluding the Topics blog). His blog is well written, visual, and interesting. 41,000 people around the world read it. It’s really a great blog!

Confessions of a [Former] Fatgirl
http://fatgirl.areavoices.com
The emotional rollercoaster of losing – and – gaining weight over and over again. I really love this blog written by Celeste Beam. She writes about what so many of us live. The ups and downs of trying to live a healthy lifestyle. She gives us a weekly healthy recipe, but she also writes very honest, inspirational and sometimes funny posts about falling off the wagon. For example, she writes one morning about how she replaced her yogurt and fruit breakfast with 2 cupcakes and tortilla chips. But then she reminds us not to give up and shows us how to get back on track. Great information!

A Pinch of This

Home-created meals and ideas to fit anyone’s budget. This stay at home mom says she’s not a chef, but she wants to chronicle how she manages to put food on the table for her family every night.

Cobbers on the Brain

Neurochemistry students at Concordia College (Moorhead, MN) break down technical information on brain science so the average reader can understand it. I love this idea. A chemistry professor at Concordia College wanted to teach her students, some of whom will go onto medical school, how to communicate complicated medical information to the average person. This blog is their effort in doing this. I hope it leads to some future doctors with great communication skills!
