Areavoices Digest #78 – Now this might make my garden grow

We all must admit our shortcomings.

For example, I am not good at basketball, geometry or abstaining from chocolate.

I am also a really bad gardener. The picture you see to the left is not taken from my garden, but it might as well have been. After years of blaming my pathetic little plants on deer, rabbits and weed infestation,  I finally admitted it -  I’m just green-thumb challenged.

But there is help. Areavoices is home to several bloggers who aren’t green thumb challenged and who share their wisdome through every post. They’ll take you through how to successfully garden without wanting to pull your hair out or shoot those rabbits.

Check out their blogs in this week’s digest along with a brand new counseling blog.

Areavoices Digest #66 – Watching the Weather and Getting Away from it all!

I’m not going to lie. I’m more than a little envious of some of my friends right now. While going through Facebook posts I noticed one friend is enjoying Disney World with her family, another is in Hawaii with her husband and still another is on the beach somewhere in the Caribbean.

That’s fine really. I’m okay. It’s no big deal that we’re expecting a major winter storm in Moorhead, Minnesota tomorrow. In fact much of the Dakotas and Minnesota are bracing for it. We probably shouldn’t complain as it’s been a beautiful warm and relatively snow free winter. But still we can’t help but gripe just a little bit. We can almost see spring from our windows. Now this?

Anyway, in honor of the upcoming storm and those friends who have chosen to get away from it all for spring break, I give you this weeks’ digest of recommended blogs. Enjoy!

How green is your thumb?

I’ve always had a brown thumb. Plants don’t stand a chance in my house. I haven’t had much luck with my garden either. That is, until I planted strawberries a couple of summers ago. They’ve gone completely nuts this year. This is just about 3/4 of what I harvested in June. Suffice it to say my relatives have had their share of strawberry jam and strawberry rhubarb pie.

Maybe my luck is changing because I’m reading more gardening blogs these days. (Sounds good right?)  Two of my favorite gardening blogs are The Dirt and East of ‘Weedin. When I read how real gardeners tackle their issues, I’m inspired and the proof is in my ginormous strawberry harvest.

I decided to highlight these blogs a little more by adding a category to our directory. They can now be found under “Home and Garden” instead of “Special Interest.”

But I’m also excited about another blog under Home and Garden. It’s called Randomly Remodeling. The author is a wife and mom of 4 who calls herself “easily distracted.” It should be fun to follow her do-it-yourself projects.

If you’ve never looked through our directory of featured Areavoices blogs, check it out at www.areavoices.com or under the Areavoices section of our FCC newspapers.
