Check out what these ten year olds are doing on Areavoices! – Areavoices Digest #84

I just love this idea! Matt and Graham are two ten year olds who love baseball. This summer they’re setting out on a six day six game six city baseball tour with their dads and they’re taking Areavoices with them. They’ve set up a blog to journal their adventures. It’s something we’ve seen a couple of times this summer. Remember the Nasello’s. They’re blogging as they travel through the state of North Dakota this summer.

This is such a great way to preserve the memories of your trip. Not only can your friends and family see what you’re doing, it’s a good way for you to look back years from now. Easier, than trying to find the time to put photos in a scrapbook or album. (I’m pretty sure I still have photos from a 1978 trip to Medora in an old Red Owl grocery bag lying around somewhere.)

Anyway, have fun Matt and Graham!

Areavoices Digest #77 – I love this idea for a family summer vacation!

Every year, families all over America start thinking about it (if they haven’t been dreaming about it since January). What are we going to do for summer vacation? We spend thousands flying (and with high gas prices driving too) to all kinds of summer hot spots.

But how many of us explore our own backyards? I’m not really talking about a “Staycation.” That implies you’re staying in your own home or city. What I’m talking about is touring your own state. Looking around at what’s just a few hundred miles away and seeing what outstate tourists see.

I think about this when I’ve traveled to the Washington D.C. area to visit my relatives and do some sightseeing. Often, after telling my aunts and uncles, who live in suburban Washington, that I’m going to check out one tourist spot or another in DC, they’ll say, “We haven’t even seen that yet.”

Many of us don’t bother looking at what’s close at hand.

Well, that’s what native North Dakotan Sarah Nasello and her family are doing. They’re taking the time this summer to immerse themselves in all things North Dakota. So not only will they see the tourist hotspots they’ll check those off the wall places as well,  Meet the people and walk down the mainstreets. She’ll be documenting all of it in her Areavoices blog.

It should be a lot of fun. Check out her blog and the other recommended blogs of the week.

We’ve seen the news stories and read the reports from the oil boom in Western North Dakota.  They paint a vivid picture of both the good and bad that come with an economic boom and population explosion. Areavoices Digest #69 – Duluth scratches the history itch

Back when I worked for WDAY-TV, they used to send me to the dungeon. But I liked it. Actually it wasn’t so much a dungeon, more like a vault – a place where the station’s past was kept. Going down there was like stepping back in time, walking by shelves stacked with old videotapes, records, or assignment log books. Old equipment and promotional materials were laying around as well.

Most of the time, I went down there to find a specific item for the story I might have been working on. (I did several stories commemorating North Dakota’s Centennial back in 1989 as well as marking then end of the 20th century through a collaborative project with ABC called “The Century.”) But while, I might have gone down there looking for something specific it was easy to get lost in the stacks, digging through the old stuff like a kid in Grandma’s attic. I found it all so fascinating! At the same time, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad that some of it seemed to be going to waste.

That’s why I’m so happy to see what’s going on at the Duluth News Tribune. The newspaper is celebrating the 4th anniversary of its blog “The Attic.”Andrew Krueger curates the blog full of archival material from the paper. It’s usually one of the top five most popular blogs on Areavoices. According to our latest data from Quantcast, about 10,000 people read it every month.

Krueger says, “From my experience with the Attic, it’s great because readers like it and respond to it; it puts those old photos and articles to use instead of just collecting dust; and it’s something that can be done whenever there is some time available.”

You don’t have to work at a newspaper to start an historical blog such as this. Your own school, club, organization or business is probably ripe with its own history. People might like to read about. Contact me if you’d like to learn how. Until then, enjoy this week’s look at recommended blogs:

Areavoices Digest #67 – More than just Marilyn Hagerty

That title you see above is my cheap ploy to get you to click on my blog. I’m not beneath trickery. But the fact is: Marilyn Hagerty is hot. Stories about her and now her Areavoices blog are generating huge traffic from around the world for this website and many more. I love it! Not just because of my position as Areavoices cheerleader, but because Marilyn seems like a wonderful woman who deserves all the attention and accolades she’s getting. I’m just wishing I could have been the one to accompany her to New York City, instead of my co-worker Ryan Babb. Anyway, I told him to say “hi” to Anderson Cooper for me.

That being said, my point is this. I wanted to let you know Marilyn Hagerty isn’t the only  hot commodity on Areavoices. Check out this week’s group of new and recommended blogs. Enjoy!

Areavoices Digest #66 – Watching the Weather and Getting Away from it all!

I’m not going to lie. I’m more than a little envious of some of my friends right now. While going through Facebook posts I noticed one friend is enjoying Disney World with her family, another is in Hawaii with her husband and still another is on the beach somewhere in the Caribbean.

That’s fine really. I’m okay. It’s no big deal that we’re expecting a major winter storm in Moorhead, Minnesota tomorrow. In fact much of the Dakotas and Minnesota are bracing for it. We probably shouldn’t complain as it’s been a beautiful warm and relatively snow free winter. But still we can’t help but gripe just a little bit. We can almost see spring from our windows. Now this?

Anyway, in honor of the upcoming storm and those friends who have chosen to get away from it all for spring break, I give you this weeks’ digest of recommended blogs. Enjoy!

Areavoices Digest #38: P-P-P-Penny Keep Posting that Blog!

If you’ve had children anytime after 1990 or so, you undoubtedly know what my headline means. If you haven’t you probably think I’m weird.  You might think that regardless. But let me explain.

Young children in the upper Midwest are nuts for “Penny and Pals.” Penny and her Pals travel around our region entertaining and educating children through her music. My kids went bonkers for her when they were in preschool. Now you’d think I would have gotten sick of those tunes we had to play over and over again in the mini van. But Penny’s songs never did get old.

I’m not going to say people didn’t look at me funny when, one day, I kept singing  “Uncle Underwood’s Unbelievable Ugly Underwear” at work. What was I going to do? It was stuck in my head. Even so, I wasn’t tired of the tunes. (Today’s headline is in reference to Penny’s friend Bernie and his need to keep bouncing “that ball.” Look it up on Penny’s website. )

Penny’s popularity with the under 8 set makes me all the more excited that she’s joined us on Areavoices. Penny’s blog is just the first of the blogs I’m recommending in this week’s digest. And remember: “R-R-R-Readers, keep reading these blogs!” Okay, that was going too far. I apologize. Nonetheless these are some great blogs!

Areavoices Digest #26 – A whole lot of hockey and more!

Most weeks in this look at recommended areavoices blogs I suggest 5 or 6, but this week (as Regis Philbin might say) “I’M OUTTA CONTROL!”

Much of that has to do with the topics around the water cooler this week. For some it’s spring flooding for others it’s the Frozen Four. So many of my recommendations this week revolve around that.

First, with the University of Minnesota Duluth and University of North Dakota both in the Frozen Four this week, I expect blogs on the teams would be pretty popular. If you’ve never read blogs about the Bulldogs or the Sioux on areavoices, you might want to check out these blogs:

UND Hockey: http://undhockey.areavoices.com
News and notes from Grand Forks Herald writer Brad Elliot Schlossman

UND Sports: http://undsports.areavoices.com

For those looking to follow flooding in the Red River Valley – two new flood blogs:

City of Fargo – http://cityoffargo.areavoices.com

Now to the rest of the recommended blogs:

I think that’s a great idea.

THE PERPETUAL EXPLORER – http://perpetualexplorer.areavoices.com  Written by Victoria Gelling, she says this is “a blog about the joys and headaches of travel.” I think we can all relate to this blog.

The final two blogs are both education-related:

5 REASONS TO START A TRAVEL BLOG ON AREAVOICES

I’m the first to admit I’m the human version of Pavlov’s dog. But for me the stimuli is not the sound of a bell, but the mention of Disney. And the response is not salivation, but travel planning. Recently, my husband mentioned that his upcoming work conference is being held in Orlando. He mentioned that perhaps the whole family should join him and make a Disney vacation out of it. Ding Ding Ding. That’s all I needed. I was off to the internet to check availability, prices, and attractions.

I’m not alone. Most Americans go online when they start to plan vacations. I heard about that and more when I attended the Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism last week. In his keynote address travel marketing consultant Roger Brooks offered suggestions to state tourism offices, convention and visitor’s bureau offices and more about how to more successfully market their location. Much of his suggestions involve greater use of the tools provided  by the internet. For information go to his website at www.destinationdevelopment.com

After hearing him speak he inspired me to see what role areavoices blogging could play in meeting the needs of the tourism and travel industry. So here it is:

The 5 Reasons Tourism and Travel Officials Should Start a Free Blog on areavoices:

                                  1. Travelers want MORE, MORE, MORE. I’m quoting Billy Idol here, but it’s true: travel planners want MORE information both from experts and from other travelers. Brooks reports that 70% of those who go online are frustrated by travel planning. They are seeking as much as they find about how they will spend their hard earned money. What are their options? What can they do to get the most for their money?  They want to hear from the organization, state or attraction to whom they’ll ve visiting and they want to hear from other travelers who’ve been there/done that. They will book trips based upon 3rd party reviews. Shouldn’t your online pitch be out there in your own blog?

2. You need to be where the people are. Many of us have probably done it. You’re at work. You need a little break, so you do a little surfing regarding your vacation. According to Brooks, 94% of Americans are using the internet to plan their vacatons. A full 19 out of 20 people are doing it. Brooks says the web should be the #1 place for their marketing efforts.

3. You could be featured on newspaper websites throughout the upper midwest . Through areavoices, not only are you accesible on the worldwide web, but you might also be featured on Forum Communications Company newspaper and broadcast websites in the Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin, a region ripe with tourist attractions from the Wisconsin Dells to Teddy Roosevelt’s Medora from the lakes of Minnesota to those 4 famous faces in South Dakota. Areavoices blogs are part of a network that reaches 1.5 million people, your potential travelers.

4. Reach the people most likely to visit your destination. Americans will vacation closer to home this summer. Travel officials know this better than anyone. With the economy still recovering and gas prices skyrocketing, many Americans say they will spend their vacations closer to home. That means fewer plane trips and shorter road trips. People living in the upper midwest are looking for fun options in this region. Say for example a man living in Jamestown, North Dakota wants to take his family on vacation.  He knows he can’t travel far. When he goes to The Jamestown Sun to catch up on the news of the day, he sees a blog from Minnesota tourism about the beautiful North Shore of Minnesota. There’s a fairly short road trip that he might normally not have heard about. Lots of potential to reach lots of folks.

5. Now is the perfect time of year. Whether it’s those of us sick of snow and cold, or those people who just got back from spring break anxious to go again – this is the time of year when people start examining their summer travel options. If we can’t get away from it all right now, going online to plan our vacation at least gives us a mental vacation! It makes sense to get your organizations’ travel blog up and running now to attract all of those travel planners before the rush of summer begins.

It’s nice to see have already picked up on the trend including the North Dakota Department of Tourism and the Fargo Moorhead Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. they recently started their blogs on areavoices. We’re hoping it’s just the beginning. We also know not everyone travels. Some people stay at home and enjoy activities in their own town. So we would also like to work with parks and recreation departments to share news of their events and attractions.

You know where to reach me if you who want to start a blog: tracy.briggs@fccinteractive.com. You can also get a lot of information right here on my blog or go to www.areavoices.com.  I promise it”s easy and remember it’s FREE.

How great is that?

Right up with summer vacations!

Areavoices Digest #22 – On a lookout for travel/tourism blogs!

Are you in an area that attracts tourists?

I’m starting this weeks’ Digest with that question because we’re trying to concentrate these days on getting more Tourism and Convention and Visitors Bureau blogs started. I just got back from the Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism meeting in the Wisconsin Dells. Besides enjoying slightly warmer weather and getting to see all of those protestors for myself, I learned a lot about the changing game of tourism and travel marketing. I’m going to write more about this in tomorrow’s blog, but the bottom line is that CVB and Travel professionals need a greater online presence as more and more Americans are planning their vacations almost solely online. We’re working to help get their blogs started as people are now starting to plan their summer trips.

If you would like to start a travel or tourism blog, just let me know. I’d love to help! We’d love to get travel professionals and even everyday people who want to share their own travel stories and videos.

The great news we already have some fantastic travel bloggers but we have a few more joining the areavoices party. They include both the North Dakota Department of Tourism – http://travelnd.areavoices.com  and the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors Bureau – http://visitfargomoorhead.areavoices.com   This blog is just getting rolling. So click on it in a few days and check out the great content about visiting Fargo-Moorhead.

But we have other suggested blogs for this week as well:
River Falls Community Education – http://riverfallscommunityeducation.areavoices.com  There is tremendous potential with community education throughout the region. They certainly offer a wide variety of classes and seminars so they’re chuck full of information.

Fargo Marathon – http://fargomarathon.areavoices.com  Here’s the official blog of the Fargo Marathon written by Mark Knutson, the director of the race. This year’s race is in May and is expected to attract 20,000 runners from all over the United States and certainly throughout ND, SD, MN and WI.

Stevie’s Journey into the Rabbit Hole: An Artist – http://steviefamulari.areavoices.com Stevie Famulari is a well known multi-sensory artist. You might say, “what does that mean?” Well, I will tell you, for example, that she appeared recently on The Food Network using food to create a landscape. I think she’s really interesting. Check it out.

Areavoices Digest #19 – February 16, 2011 “Spanning the Globe, etc”

Remember that old “ABC Wide World of Sports” slogan….”Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport..”
Well I feel like this digest could be “spanning the region to give you a constant variety of blog.”

I’m particularly happy with this weeks fivesome because they come from the far reaches of Forum Communications newspapers and websites. (Western ND, South Dakota, Southern MN. Sorry Wisconsin, I don’t have any Wisconsin bloggers this time around. But I did cheer for the Packers so I’m not that horrible a person, right?)  Like last week, all of these blogs are already featured in at least one website in the company. I think they’re worth checking out.

The Prairie Blog – http://theprairieblog.areavoices.com  Jim Fuglie is a former writer from The Dickinson Press. He started his blog in December, took a little break but is active again. He says his blog will be about politics and prairie literature. He says he also wants to highlight “The Best of ND, etc.”  For example, he says he might write : “’Some Of The Funniest Things Ever Written About North Dakota’ over some excerpts from columns by Wayne Lubenow or Tony Bender or Lloyd Omdahl. Or ‘Some of the Best Songs Ever Sung By North Dakotans’ over songs by Chuck Suchy or Bobby Vee. You get the idea.”  I think this is really fun stuff!
Shootin the Wit – http://shootin.areavoices.com – Laura Stoneburner says her blog is “a column about life that should never, ever be taken too seriously.”  She’s written about her disdain for public grooming, why certain songs are overplayed on the radio and why Italian pasta isn’t that good in Italy. I thought it was really fun.

South Dakota Outdoors Adventures – http://sdoa.areavoices.com.   Do you ever hunt, fish or vacation in South Dakota? This is a nice blog about the outdoors. Good reading.

Staying Fit and Healthy – http://stayingfitandhealthy.areavoices.com - Laura Devine is the owner of Real Fit Workout Studio in Cottage Grove, MN. She is blogging about fitness and wellness tips for real life people.

The Flensburger Files – http://flensburgerfiles.areavoices.com - “Based on the travels and experiences gathered by a former Minnesotan in the last decade, the Flensburg Files takes you on a tour of the outside; namely showing you some interesting places that are worth visiting and giving you some food for thought from the eyes of the writer and photographer who has been there and done that.”
Happy reading! And as always please let me know if you write a blog and you want to be featured on our newspaper and broadcast websites. We’re always looking for great bloggers!

Areavoices Digest #15 – January 19, 2011 – Welcome COBBERS and more!!!!

Here is this week’s list of recommended blogs.

@Concordia – http://atconcordia.areavoices.com – We’re excited to get Concordia College up and running on areavoices. The communications just started blogging last week, but already the blog has delivered interesting content about the happenings at this liberal arts college in Moorhead, MN. It’s also a visually appealing blog. They’ve done a nice job with graphics, photo and video.

Travel Leaders/Travel Now, Inc. – http://travelnow.areavoices.com – I’m so glad to see more travel blogs starting on areavoices and this is a good one! It’s full of travel advice and tips for more efficient and economical traveling.

The Life of a MN Resort Owner – http://lifeinnorthernminnesota.areavoices.com -  I thought this was a nice slice of life blog. It gives us a peek behind the scenes into what it takes to run a resort in lakes country. This blogger runs the White Birch Resort near Park Rapids and I’ve enjoyed reading about the goings on there.

Slightly Chilled – where we let the puck and the beat drop – http://slightlychilled.areavoices.com  This is a blog written by reporter Ryan Clark about the Fargo Force and USHL. I’m not a huge hockey fan, but I found the blog interested and slickly produced.

WindSports by Kotikites – http://kotikites.areavoices.com – Okay, this one is a little off the beaten path, but I figured why not? It’s fun. This is a blog about wind sports. We have enough of that around here, right? The bloggers run a business that sells power kites that are targeted for sports like kitesurfing, kiteboarding and kiteskiing. Gets our minds off snowblowing and floods, right?

Areavoices Digest #11 – Bytes to Broncs (and looking for a few good cookie bakers!)

Here are some of the newest blogs you might want to check out this week on areavoices. They range from new social media to rodeo bronc riding. How’s that for variety? And after you read about some of our newest blogs, read on as to why I’m looking for a few good cookie bakers!
Bytes Blog: Technology from the trenches geared for the rest of us – http://budsandbytes.areavoices.com
The Bytes Blog was created by Chris Buckley, co-owner of Buds and Bytes, Farmington, MN.  The blog highlights technology issues that affect the average consumer.  Providing an easy to comprehend guide to the pitfalls and powers of modern technology in an entertaining format, the blog seeks to reach a broader audience for technology news and information.

Midwest Media in Motion – Because sometimes life needs more than 140 characters – http://newmedia.areavoices.com
Gia Rassier is a communications specialist at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.  She says “when I’m not at work – I like to continue working, maintain my mayorships on foursquare and try to convert the nonbelievers in the social media revolution.” If you’re like me, you might ask, “what is foursquare?” Well, apparently it’s a social media platform where people can share their location with their friends via the GPS on their phone. Gia’s blog has not been up that long but her posts are very well done and original.

The Mommy Minute – http://themommyminute.areavoices.com. Stephanie Lauritsen is a hockey mom living in West Fargo, ND. She has a 5 year old and a 2 year old. She’s fairly new to blogging, but I found her writing very entertaining.

Grand Forks Salvation Army – http://gfsalarmy.areavoices.com – I think it will be particularly relevant during the holidays.

Rodeo Life with the Stroh’s – a journal following pro saddle bronc rider Shaun Stroh – http://shaunstroh.areavoices.com  This blog details behind the scenes of the rodeo circuit written by Shannon Stroh as she travels with her husband Shaun. I thought this was a fun idea. How many of us know what life in the rodeo is all about? Her last post was from warm and sunny Las Vegas.

And finally, are you the world’s best Christmas cookie baker? Or do you know someone who is? We would love to start a few baking blogs here on areavoices.  Consider sharing your favorite Christmas baking recipes with your own blog. Just go to www.areavoices.com to get started and let me know so I can share the blog with Forum Communications websites across the region. And of course, I would be happy to sample anything you bake. It’s a sacrifice, but I’ll do it.
