An easier way to share your flood stories

You might have heard about our new project at Forum Communications. It’s called “Living with Water.” Over the next several months our reporters, photographers and editors will be taking a close up look at water in our region, from coping with too much to too little and examining how we manage it and how we can ensure a safe supply now and into the future.

You are an important part of the project.

We’re asking for people in the community to share their stories about how water has affected their lives. Some of you have already contacted me about how to contribute. Now we’re making it even easier.

If you have photos, videos or stories about anything from flood fighting to lake recreation we’d love to include it on our website at http://water.areavoices.com.

There are two ways you can participate.

1. You can start your own blog and let me know about it so we can feature on the site. A blog is perfect for someone who has a lot to say, several stories to share or has a particular theme on which they like to write. Please look through the information on this blog to learn more about starting a blog. You’ll find tutorials, FAQ’s and do’s and don’ts right on the home page.

2. If you have just a few stories to share your best bet is to email me at tracy.briggs@fccinteractive.com. I can copy and paste them into the website.

If you have questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Areavoices Digest #42 – A terrific twosome

When it rains it pours. These days in addition to some of my regular duties I find myself immersed in two pretty cool projects here at Forum Communications. You could say I’m just getting my feet wet with our water project “Living with Water.”  (Pardon the pun, but I couldn’t help myself.) The project involves  FCC’s print, online, and broadcast journalists chronicling how water impacts our lives. And most importantly, we need your input too! To read more about it, click on my blog post from a couple of days ago or go to http://water.areavoices.com to learn more about it.

Beautiful Women of Committee

Now, we’re undertaking another special project that is near and dear to my  heart. It’s called “Beautiful Women of: Letting Inner Beauty Shine.” As a mom of two daughters I’m well aware of the media imagery they face everyday. Knowing the effect the media has on body image among young girls and women in our society, our organization has an opportunity to create awareness and have a positive influence on our community. Using the multimedia platforms of Forum Communications, including here on Areavoices, we will celebrate the stories of the beautiful, inspiring women in our area. You will be able to nominate the deserving women in your life. We will then select a few women each month to feature here, and readers will vote for woman they most want to see featured on an upcoming WDAY news broadcast, in The Forum, and on WDAY radio and these companies websites. The woman you select also will be treated to a generous prize package.

Two very different undertakings but so worthwhile and fun! Those are just two of the blogs I’m recommending in this week’s digest:

Living with Water – http://water.areavoices.com A Forum Communications Special Project with the goal of building understanding about water and its impact on our lives across the region.

Bison Sports Blog: Bison Rubes talk NDSU – http://ndsubisonsports.areavoices.com Kyle Roth is senior at North Dakota State University majoring in broadcasting. He writes for Bison Illustrated and the NDSU Spectrum and started the Bison Sports Blog as a place for fans to talk Bison sports.

Joe Fitness: Personal Training and Bootcamps - http://joefitness.areavoices.com   Joe Ketterling is a personal trainer specializing in fat loss.  In addition to his personal training business he runs FM Bootcamps, in Fargo, North Dakota.

Cover to Cover – http://covertocover.areavoices.com -  Krista Thom is an avid reader who reviews books from the local region and beyond.

Beautiful Women of: Letting Inner Beauty Shine – http://beautifulwomenof.areavoices.com   A multi-media project from Forum Communications celebrating and recognizing remarkable women throughout the region.

AREAVOICES DIGEST #8 – NOV 10, 2010

it’s been an exciting week here on areavoices. Not only did we host our first ever “areavoices walkthrough” yesterday, but we’re welcoming some new individuals and organizations to the platform. Check them out:

MS SIMPLICITY – http://mssimplicty.areavoices.com – Melissa Schmalenberger is a lawyer by trade, but a few years ago she startled dabbling in home organizing and soon found it taking off. Melissa has her own website and has been very active blogging on it. She’s also very active on Facebook and has built a national following. I’m really excited to get her own board. She frequently writes about easy meals to make for busy families, or things such as how to handle all of those papers your kids bring home from school. Great practical advice. She told me this morning, she’s hoping to run a list of Christmas organizing tips in the coming weeks.

EAST METRO WATER – TIPS AND TALES FOR KEEPING WATER CLEAN – http://eastmetrowater.areavoices.com. This blog is written by The East Metro Water Resource Education Program. It’s a partnership formed to improve local surface and groundwater resources through education and outreach about non-point source water pollution. While it’s most relevant to communities such as Woodbury, Cottage Grove, Lake Elmo, Forest Lake, Stillwater, etc from what I’ve read there is environmental information that would appeal to anyone interested in environmental issues.

FILL THE DOME 2010 -  http://fillthedome.areavoices.com – For the past few years,  K-12 students in Fargo-Moorhead and some outlying communities hold a massive food drive to fill the Fargodome with food. It’s been a huge success and they’re doing it again on Nov 22-23rd. They were blogging on their website, but we got them to start on areavoices to get more exposure for this wonderful project.

Speaking of schools….two more schools are on board with us:

JAMESTOWN COLLEGE NEWS – http://jamestowncollegenews.areavoices.com  – Jamestown College has now started its official school blog to share the latest news from campus.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN NEWS – http://dakotawesleyan.areavoices.com – Dakota Wesleyan out of Mitchell, SD has also started an official school blog to share the latest news from its campus. This blog is really well done. It’s has a nice look to it. Great photos and good information. It’s a nice example of how a college can utilize a blog to share its message.
